The August 16, 2008 meeting was held in the Newton Public Library.  The meeting was called to order at 9:08am by President Dan Inskeep.  Present were Lon Buller, David Duerksen, David Godshall, Roger Horst, Dan Inskeep, Bob Ogden, Daniel Pankratz, Kent Stutzman, and Don Unruh.

Minutes: The July Minutes were read and approved.

Treasurer's Report: The checking account balance is $551.13, with $25 in petty cash, for a total of $576.13.

Meeting Time/Location:  There was more discussion about the meeting time and location.  It was noted that it might be more difficult than originally expected to meet in the Emergency Services facilities than originally anticipated, but it could still be explored as an option.  The library would probably continue to be an option if we wanted to meet in an evening the week; the library meeting location is reserved on a meeting-by-meeting basis.  There was a motion to move the meeting to 3rd Tuesdays of every month, 7pm, starting with the next meeting on September 16th.  The motion passed unanimously.

Hamfests: Received a mailing about the Joplin Hamfest at Hammon's Convention Center in Joplin, Missouri, Friday, August 22, 4-9pm, and Saturday, August 23, 8am-2pm.  Passed out fliers, and there were also two free tickets available for anyone who wanted them.

Upcoming events: MCC Flatlanders Bike Ride in September 20, Newton Festival of Lights Parade in December.

Batteries:  David Duerksen pointed out a place to buy surplus lead-acid batteries for what looked like a good price, however it was unknown their age or capacity, and it was pointed out that shipping can end up being very expensive due to their being classified as hazardous material.

MCC Flatlanders Bike Ride: A motion was made that the Newton Amateur Radio club help with communication on the ride on September 20, around 8am-3pm.  The Secretary will communicate with Ken Jantzen to let them know our willingness to help and get the details about their needs.

Emergency Communication Center: Lon and Dan discussed the problems with the HF radio in the comm center and was is needed to get it working properly again.  Dan was going to check the coax to the antenna.  Kent mentioned the Comm Vehicle and wondered is there was an antenna that could be placed in the vehicle instead of having to find a mag mount antenna in the event of the vehicle needing to be put into use in an emergency -- at the Folklife Festival a few years ago a mag mount antenna was used.  There was discussion about climbing the tower on the roof of the Harvey County building and re-working some of the antennas, changing the dipole antenna's feed, maybe adding some pulleys to make it easier to work on in the future.  1st Thursday of every month, 7pm, is the state RACES net, and it would be good if Harvey County were able to participate more regularly.

RACES: Kent has not held a Harvey County RACES net in about 5 weeks.  The last one he held had no participation from Harvey County RACES members, all checkins were from out of county.  He was wondering how to get participation increased among the local RACES members.  One suggestion was they might need a reminder of the net times.

Meeting adjourned at 10:12am.
