The January 21, 2006 meeting was held at the Food Court at the Newton Factory Outlet Mall. The meeting was called to order at 9:20am by President Dan Inskeep. Present were Ko Bartel, Fred Becker, Lee Buller, Lon Buller, Aaron Diller, Marc Friesen, Sean Kelly, Mike Harvey, David Godshall, Bob Harder, Kent Harder, Dan Inskeep, Ray Kinstetter (no lincense), Bob Ogden, Kent Stutzman, and Roger Wilson.
Minutes: December Minutes were accepted without corrections.
Treasurer's Report: There was no report.
Repeater: The new repeater has been installed. Dan is still tweaking it. David Godshall printed out the manual for Dan but neglected to bring it to the meeting to give to Dan. Good output, probably should clean some connectors and sweep the cans, maybe set up a dedicated Repeater group to keep the repeater in shape.
Marion Ford Fund: Kent Harder has not yet written a letter of thanks to Bob Ford but is still planning to do so.
Emergency Coordinator Report: Roger Wilson and Lon were discussing the amount of physical desk space available in the EOC for radios, and Roger was asking club members their thoughts on using fewer or smaller multiband radios instead of separate radios to save space, and there was concern that in emergency operation it's better to have multiple radios that are simple to use; some of the newer multiband radios are menu driven and harder to use by operators unfamiliar with the radio. Lee suggested to make sure the HF radio have DSP and noise blanking.
ARES: Kent Stutzman has scheduled an ARES meeting for Saturday, 7pm, on January 28 at the Salvation Army, 350 N. Market in Wichita. Plan to arrive around 6:30pm because the doors will lock promptly.
Amateur Radio Advocacy: Mike Harvey raised the question about how we can generate more interest in HAM Radio. With cell phones abundant there is a perception that HAM Radio is no longer necessary. Mike passed around a printout entitled "100 Great Publicity Ideas for your Amateur Radio Club". Lee suggested pushing HF and world-wide communication because that's still "magic" and exciting. Also homebrew, showing people they can build their own equipment and that also adds excitement. Bob Ogden suggested Middle School age would be an ideal place to try to make an impact. Fred suggested we make contact with the Director of Extended Services or Superintendent Dr. Mortin to figure out how to get our foot in the door. Dan Inskeep will try to make the initial contact. We also will need to try to get into the Boy Scouts Jamboree On The Air if we can; Roger Jost may be able to help make the contact.
National Weather Service: The annual Weather Spotter's Meeting will be at 6:30pm on Tuesday, March 7, at Chisholm Middle School.
Antenna: Kent Harder wondered if there was interest in club members building a VHF 6-element beam using aluminum tubing, and a number of members expressed an interest.
Dayton HamVention: Mike is wanting to go to Dayton and wondered if there was enough interest in renting a van and a bunch of people going. The Dayton HamVention trip would be around May 18-22 and the entrance fee is $15. Roger said the Wichita club has sometimes rented a bus to go down. Several expressed an interest. Lee goes every year and gave some tips. He said he goes to meet other HAMs, including a lot of the famous ones. Roger said if we do this, make sure we set a price otherwise it will be harder to people to commit to going.
Meeting adjourned at 10:20am.
