The May 20, 2006 meeting was held at the Food Court at the Newton Factory Outlet Mall. The meeting was called to order at 9:07am by President Dan Inskeep. Present were Ko Bartel, Lon Buller, Aaron Diller, David Duerksen, Marc Friesen, David Godshall, Bob Harder, Kent and Priscilla Harder, Mike Harvey, Dan Inskeep, Sean Kelly, Bob Ogden, Robin McDaniel, Kent Stutzman, and Roger Wilson.
Minutes: The April Minutes were accepted without corrections.
Treasurer's Report: No update reported.
New Towers: Lon said he might know next week if they are ready to start the tower at Camp Hawk. All the radio equipment Lon ordered has come in. Dan has obtained the free coax Lee had talked about and will look to be purchasing the connectors, about $85 apiece.
Field Day: Will start setting up around noon on Friday, June 24. Bob has some Field Day materials he is planning on sharing after the meeting. Sean has some new equipment he inherited that could be made available. Bob mentioned that Lee is hoping to put up a station across the lake, and Mike said he will bring his camper and could bring a generator.
Tax Exempt: Dan is communicating with another club that has successfully applied for 501(c)3 tax-free status so he is hoping to make progress on that process.
Bike Rides: McPherson Club does a bike ride, they were wondering in we'd help with their bike ride (in July) and in exchange they'd help with the MCC Bike Ride in September. Roger got several people to commit to helping so he will let them know we'll help. For the MCC Bike Ride, Roger will not be here. He has resigned from the Museum and is planning on moving to Topeka to be closer to his daughters. Dan has agreed to take over the coordination of the MCC Bike Ride amateur involvement.
Kansas QSO Party: Lee is on his way to Dayton so he was not available to talk about if there has been any progress on coordinating a Kansas QSO Party.
HAM Radio Class: Currently about 4 students who are interested in their Tech license without code. Two are from El Dorado, and one is a Pilot.
Next Meeting: June's meeting is at the same time as the Newton Sidewalk Sale, and Kent was wondering if there was any interest in changing the meeting date or time if people wanted to go. Also going on that day are hamfests or sales in Derby and Dallas. Roger moved that we move the meeting to the prior Saturday, June 10th, the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Field Day Program: Bob handed out some Field Day materials, including section maps, band plans, and field day rules. We can operate on almost all the HAM bands, but 10m and 15m might not be operable because of band conditions. Bob showed how to read the band plan to make sure we are in a legal range. Legal or recommended voice ranges are 10m=28.1-28.7, 15m=21.2-21.450, 20=14.150-14.350, 40=7.150-7.300, 80=3.750-4.000, 160=1.840-1.850. He also briefly covered the rules. Operation starts 1pm Saturday through 1pm Sunday, with setup allowed as early as 1pm Friday. He covered the various classes and sample exchanges. We normally operate 3A, for 3 transmitters as a club, plus a GOTA station. We went through the bonuses and talked about the ones we thought we could try to earn; we should be able to earn over 1000 points, especially with the new GOTA station rules.
Meeting Location: A motion was made to hold our next meeting in Hesston, at Hesston College, instead of Newton so Bob can host some additional Field Day practice. That motion was seconded and passed unanimously. So the June meeting will be a week earlier and in a different location. The club secretary will reflect that in the postcards and E-Mails he sends.
Mailing: Dan is getting a list of local non-clubmember amateurs together and is planning on sending a mailing inviting them to our club, possibly with a special membership offer.
Ham Radio Military Appreciation Day: Kent Stutzman noted that next Saturday, Memorial Day weekend, is a day for Amateurs to set up stations and talk to Military personnel, allow others to talk to Military personnel, etc.
Meeting adjourned at 10:25am.
